Is Your Fat Beer Belly From Drinking Beer?

I was talking with a friend earlier today. I asked him why on Earth, at 40 years of age, is he trying to look like a teenager with saggy pants? "For goodness sake, man, pull up your pants!" I told him. He tried to explain to me that he is not comfortable wearing his pants around his waist because of his fat beer belly. He seemed almost saddened when we talked about this. He doesn't look fat, I told him. He isn't fat anywhere except in his gut, he explained. He doesn't like the way his clothes fit, and he is embarrassed to undress in the locker room at the gym because he works out every day - he shouldn't have this beer belly. So I did a little research for him and this is what I found.

A fat beer belly can come from beer

I always thought this was a myth, just a funny name for excess belly fat in men. This is not true. A beer belly really can be a result of drinking too much beer. Beer can be a major contributor to the visceral fat that forms around your liver and other internal abdominal organs. An actual beer belly is recognizable by the hardness of the fat. Visceral fat tends to feel more like muscle; it is harder than other types of belly fat. It is also one of the harder kinds of fats to get rid of. This is why you tend to see otherwise healthy looking men with fat beer bellies.

Dieting doesn't work

It is true that a healthy diet is good for you. But dieting won't get rid of a fat beer belly, although a bad diet will make it more difficult to get rid of. Unless you go on a beer diet - meaning giving up the beer, not drinking beer for breakfast, lunch and dinner - your diet alone will not get rid of the beer gut.

Exercise can help or hurt

Certain exercises can be very helpful in getting rid of a fat beer belly, while other exercises can actually thwart your efforts. The trick to getting rid of the gut is to train yourself to hold your stomach muscles in during all of your daily activities, including exercise. A big reason that beer bellies are so difficult to lose is because of weakened stomach muscles. Some exercises, like jogging, tend to weaken these muscles even more because it is nearly impossible to jog for any length of time while holding your stomach in - breathing takes over at some point. Crunches are very helpful in getting rid of beer fat. It has also been helpful to wrap your stomach area with an herbal wrap while doing these exercises to reduce the fat even quicker.

So I went to visit my friend and when I got there he offered me a beer. I said, "No thank you." I told him my findings about how to take care of his fat beer belly and offered him a bottle of water instead.
